The role of uncertainty in Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. Uncertainty leads to suspense and fear which drives characters towards insanity and causes readers to empathize with the narrator.

In The Fall of the House of Usher, there is ambiguity ring Madelines destruction and her return--neither the characters nor the readers know the move of Madelines death or if she was rattling fallen when interred. Soon after the burial, Usher starts to suspect that they had buried Madeline age she was still alive: ...I hear it, and soak up perceive it....Many minutes, some hours, many days, have I heard it... and so far I d ared not speak! We have put her living in the grave accent! (28). This question creates trepidation and disquietude for Usher because he fearfulnesss Madeline is...hurrying to reprehend [him] for [his] haste in burying her; he deforms apprehensive and vehement at the sounds he hears in his house, not knowing if they are plan of attack from the tombs.         The fear and suspense that overcome Usher drives him towards aberration by overwhelming and consuming his life with fury and fear of everything nearly him. Ushers fears take over his thoughts: There was a species of half-baked hilarity in his eyes--an evidently restrained hysteria in his on the whole demeanor (25). From being in constant fear and anticipation, Ushers actions become irrational, muttering to himself and gazing upon vacancy for long hours, in an situation of the profoundest attention, as if listening to some imaginary sound (24).         The cause of the hysteria and terror in Usher is unknown to the fabricator for nearly of the story--until Usher finally admits that he suspected he buried Madeline alive. The narrator witnesses the strange changes coming over Usher, which light to appal him as they increase. It was no wonder that his context terrified--that it infect me.
